Member of Parliament, is probably best known today as the long and
amicably estranged husband of the legendary traveler, letter writer and
eccentric proto-feminist, Mary Wortley Montagu. Here Montagu examines
the histories of Sparta, Athens, Thebes, Carthage and Rome and draws
parallels between them and Britain. A sound, appealing copy of a very
uncommon title in the first edition: OCLC lists no examples earlier
than the second edition of 1760.
