Ciampini (1633-1698) was an ecclesiastical archaeologist. In 1671 he founded
a society for ecclesiastical history, and in 1679, under the patronage of
Queen Christina of Sweden, an academy of the sciences. This work is a valuable
historical source since many of the illustrated edifices have since deteriorated
or been destroyed.
