AUDEN, W. H THE DOUBLE MAN
Random House New York (1941) First Edition. Bloomfield & Mendelson A24a: 
2000 copies printed, precedes the English edition. Initials 
"H.G.S./Christmas/1942" in the middle of the front endpaper beneath 
which is written the German phrase "...doch grabt er" (butdig it). At 
the top of the endpaper Auden has SIGNED and INSCRIBED the book to 
"Herbert Santoff/with best wishes/from/Wystan Auden." At the bottom 
Auden has written four lines from Friedrich Hoelderlin's poem "Der 
Mensch (Kaum sprossten...)": "Sich H”hlen in den Bergen und sp„ht im 
Schacht/Von seines Vaters heiterem Lichte fern/Dem Sonnengott auch 
ungetreu, der/Knechte nicht liebt und der Sorge spottet." Spine gilt 
dull. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper.        $1500.00
