We recently acquired this set as part of a larger lot. It lacks the
sixth volume and, due to the scarcity of this title, we are unlikely to
be able to complete the set, so we have decided to offer the other
volumes individually. We have noted in the past that some of the maps
from this set have been offered at handsome prices. Additionally, the 44
folding copper engravings of plants found, or noted, by Charlevoix in
his travels are sought after by those wishing to frame such items.

1. *CHARLEVOIX, Pierre-Francois-Xavier de. /HISTOIRE ET DESCRIPTION
GENERALE DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE, avec le Journal Historique d'un Voyage
fair par Order du Roi dans l'Amerique Septentrionnale/*/./ Volume I only
of the six volume duodecimo set published in 1744. Rollin Fils, Paris.
1744. 1st edition, 12mo, pp. viii, 454. The text is in French. Two very
early bookplates on front pastedown: one armorial and the other small
and more discrete.

Charlevoix (1682-1761), a Jesuit, visited New France from 1705 to 1709
as a teacher. He returned in 1720 upon royal command to ascertain the
prospects for exploration and the existence of the western ocean. During
1721-22, he made a careful survey of French establishments and travel
routes in America, and from his observations, and from the archives of
his order, prepared the first general history of what would become
Canada (see TPL 188.). The maps, dated 1743-44, are by famed
cartographer Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772). There is still uncertainty as
to whether the first edition was published in three large octavo
volumes, or in six duodecimo volumes, although the balance of authority
leans to the claim of the former. What is clear, however, is that the
first printing of Charlevoix's /Histoire/ was in 1744, and that there is
little difference, other than in the index, between the 8vo or 12mo
editions (the latter of which was printed by several different
publishers - probably a publishing syndicate)

This is the first volume (only) of the six volume duodecimo edition. It
contains three of the five maps with which it was issued, and the
vestigal remains of the fourth. The maps which are present include
"Carte des Costes de la Floride Francoise"; "Carte de la Riviere de
Richelieu et du Lac Champlain"; and "Carte de l'Isle de Montreal et de
ses Environs" (all by Bellin). Each map is a bit foxed, and two have
professionally repaired closed tears, else they are in very good
condition. The book is in the original leather binding, which is now
very worn, with cracked joints. The contents are complete and still
tight with occasional foxing. (See Gagnon 793, Lande S465, Waterson
1761, Howes 307, Sabin 521, 522).

Price: $350.00.
