[BURNEY, FRANCES ("FANNY), MADAME D'ARBLAY.] CAMILLA: OR, A
PICTURE OF YOUTH. [FIVE VOLUMES.] New York: John Bull, 1787, (Vol.
5 has the imprint of Samuel Campbell, N.Y., 1787.) 12mos, old calf,
approx. 6 1/2 X 4 inches, some wear, hinges indicate gluing
reinforcement. In Vol. One the top corner of 9 leaves are gone (no
loss), in Vol. Three the lower corner of L4 is gone affecting 1
letter in 2 words, all volumes with intermittent moderate staining
not affecting legibility. Complete with viii,232; iii, blank, 329;
iii, blank, 255; iii, blank, 234; iii, blank, 295 pages. Interesting
inscription in each volume with reference to two leading
Penna.-German families: "Rebecca Hiester's - Presented by her
Affectionate Sister Catherine Hiester. - R. C. Muhlenberg." (This
novel has been described as "a story of frustration and
impoverishment." With its proceeds she was able to build a house for
her family which they called "Camilla Cottage." Here as elsewhere
she is seen as a literary precursor of her friend, Jane Austen. Her
general attitude is satiric "with an eye to large questions such as
the politics of female identity ... [&] her perspective on the social
lives and struggles of women in a predominantly male-oriented
society.")  $850.00                                       (Trade
