Contemporary ink ownership signatures in each volume, with a few scattered

important work. //

Black's "Lectures..." is considered a cornerstone in any collection of books
relating to chemistry. His individual accomplishments included the
rediscovery of what we now know to be carbon dioxide; but more importantly
he is known for his successful efforts to provide a measurement for heat.
Black lectured for many years at the University of Edinburgh, following in
the footsteps of his mentor Doctor William Cullen; and while neither his
notes nor lectures were published in his lifetime, they were eventually
published by John Robison, a friend and student, who understood Black's work
and provided a substantial introduction to the published version of the
lectures. //

This American edition, published four years after the first edition
(Edinburgh) in 1803 is quite scarce. Completely re-set, the edition includes
the three plates, the 'notes on the plates', and the "index" found in the
first edition. Leather Bound. Image available upon request (28759) $950.00
