[Rarebooks] For Sale: Quarles, Emblems etc., 1639

QUARLES, FRANCIS.  EMBLEMES [&]  HIEROGLYPHIKES OF THE LIFE OF 
MAN.  London: J. Dawson for Francis Eglesfeild [sic], [1639], & 
London: John Dawson for Francis Eglesfield, 1639.  2 volumes in 1, as 
issued, each with half-title   & engraved title page.   Old leather, 
small 8vo, approx. 5 1/2 X  3 1/2 inches.  Both covers blindstamped 
with rules and corner ornaments, new leather spine with raised bands 
and new label.  [8], 381 pages, missing X1 - a blank leaf. First 
title leaf repaired with old paper at upper right with marginal loss 
at the top of the engraving and several words of the imprint at lower 
left. Marginal paper repair to K4 with slight loss; likewise [K5], 
with loss of a number of words at the start of 15 lines; likewise 
[K6], no loss.  Bold signature of Mariana Shuckburgh (of whom there 
is some mention in Google), 1785, on end paper, and signatures of 
Elizabeth Fry and Mary Fry in the margins of  p. 160, (Kin - perhaps 
daughters? - of the famous Elizabeth Fry ? )  and signature of Joseph 
Tyndal on rear blank.Some pages mispaginated, but complete. 
ILLUSTRATED THROUGHOUT with the curious  emblematic, often enigmatic, 
illustrations by William Marshall. The first emblem (Eve and the 
serpent under the tree, with  a camel, &c, in the background) has 
hand coloring.  Some inkings, including on the blank title page 
verso.   ESTC S115515 locates copies at Trinity College, Folger, 
Huntington & one other. Except as noted, a clean copy in very decent
