We offer for Sale:
Norddeutscher Lloyd. (Lloyd Zeitung). THE PROGRESS OF GERMAN
SHIPBUILDING. WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE FLEET
OF THE NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD. FORTSCHRITTE DES DEUTSCHEN SCHIFFBAUES
UNTER BESONDERE BERUCKSICHTIGUNG DER ENTWICKLUNG DER FLOTTE DES
NORDDEUTSCHEN LLOYD. Berlin: Hobbing & Co., 1909. 463 pp. Illus. with
6 color plates (1 folding), hundreds of b/w photos, diagrams,
figures, and drawings, 2 folding plans, plus 143 pp. of advertising
most illustrated, some full page plates, some in color. 4to. Modern
light green linen, green morocco spine label with gilt title,
original French fold wrappers bound in. First edition. Text in German
and English on facing pages.
A most important book that was derived from the Exhibition of German
Naval architecture held in Berlin in 1908 which was presented to
highlight German advances. Covers every aspect of shipbuilding and
design from the architecture, to the experimental tanks, the interior
decoration, painting, kitchens, to ventilation, engines, steam
turbines, nautical instruments, cranes, docks, pumps, and
twenty-eight more sections, showing how a large steamship company
can effect many industries and how harbors and docks will need to be
improved to handle new larger, faster ships. No doubt much studied by
the British.
Binding very near fine, original wrappers with some minor edge wear
professionally repaired, faint browning at edges, correction to text
tipped in on one page, small marginal chip to corner of one leaf;
overall a very good+ copy. [31089] $400.00
