Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 7743 ) Fordham, Elias Pym (Edited by Frederic Austin Ogg). PERSONAL
NARRATIVE OF TRAVELS IN VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, INDIANA,
KENTUCKY; AND OF A RESIDENCE IN THE ILLINOIS TERRITORY: 1817-1818.
Cleveland: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1906. First printing, Full cloth,

Elias Fordham arrived in America in the Spring of 1817 to take part in

Birkbeck, a Quaker farmer from England. But this remarkable account, edited
from Fordham's letters and a journal, contains much else, including
observations on the land and people of Virginia, a voyage up the Chesapeake
Bay, a trip on the Pennsylvania Road from Baltimore to Pittsburgh, the
people of western Pennsylvania, a flat-boat trip from Pittsburgh to
Cleveland, the classes of people met on the frontiers, a trip through
Kentucky to Cincinnati, and much more. An important account of the
development and population of the Mississippi Valley in the early 19th
century with many interesting criticisms of the region. HOWES #F257; HUBACH
p. 49. Bound in dark green cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine title.
Library bookplate neatly tipped to front pastedown but no pocket, stamps, or
other marks. Rear endpaper is split along hinge but hinge not broken. Minor
external wear consisting of shallow extremity bumps, light rubs. Spine has a
faintly faded area of perhaps an inch square. $100.00
