First edition, Quarto [150 x 202 mm], bound in modern plain buckram
with raised bands on spine, antique style. Portrait of Cardano on
verso of title leaf, numerous engravings within the text, decorative
initials. Collation: pi4 aa-zz4 AA-ZZ4 aaa-ggg4 hhh-hhh6. Pagination
[4], [1]-309, [1]. Notes: Pagination is for each leaf, last page of
text is [310] plus Errata leaf [311]. Complete. Text browned on a
number of leaves, Marginalia or small notes in an ancient hand on
leaf A, B, Miii & Miv, Qii, & HH; corner tear leaf Oiv, old
dampstains to about 30 percent of the leaves. A complete copy.
Astronomical and astrological writings of Giromalo Cardano
[1501-1576], including a horoscope of Vesalius, "the founder of
modern, human anatomy". The horoscope appears on leaf 178 - "Andreae
Versalii, 1514 die 30 Decembris hora 17 mi. 45 post meridiem".
Cardano - Mathematician, Scientist, Physician, Scholar, & Gambler
- "perhaps the sixteenth century's greatest enthusiast for the
pursuit of marvelous phenomena" (Clark, p. 278), He was imprisoned by
the inquisition for heresy in 1570. Wellcome 1286; Bibliotheca
Osleriana. Not in Caillet, not in Bibliotheca Esoterica, Not in
Ferguson I (1906) or II (1943), not in Duveen. Three copies only
appear at auction in the last 30 years, none since 1977. Extremely rare.
