Livius, Titus. ROMSCHE HISTORY VSS T. LIVIO. (Strasburg: Joannis Gruninger.
1507). Folio. ff.cccxlvi. Profusely illustrated with a large woodcut on the
title and 191 other woodcut illustrations, some full page, attributed to H. L.
Schaufelein and H. Burgmair. Woodcut initials. BOUND WITH: Caesar, Julius.
JULIUS DER ERSTE ROMISCH KEISER... (Strasburg: Joannem Gruninger. 1508). ff.(148).
Title page with a large woodcut illustration, and text with 16 fine woodcut
illustrations, 11 of which are full-page. The two works bound together in cont.
roll tooled pigskin, rather rubbed & soiled. Later fore-edge clasps. Front &
rear free endpapers lacking. Title page to Livy a bit chipped at the blank
fore-edge, with some soiling and light staining. Text to both works with
occasional soiling, with some light stains. A few leaves with neatly repaired small
tears. Overall a solid good copy, with both texts complete. $12,500.00 (trade
discount allowed)
I: Our 1507 edition is the second edition in German (the first is 1505). It
is the first to be printed by Gruninger. The translation from the Latin and
editorial work is by B. Schofferlin and J. Wittig. BL German STC p. 521. Not in
Adams. Proctor 9902.
II: The second issue (the first issue is dated 1507) of the first edition in
German of Caesar’s Commentaries. At back are the supplemental lives by
Suetonius, Plutarch and others. The translation from the Latin is by Matthias
Ringmann. BL German STC p. 172. Not in Adams. Proctor 9901 (only recording the 1507
issue).
