William Miller London 1804 First Edition. Folio (10-1/4" x 14") bound
in contemporary full green morocco with blind stamping, gilt rules and
lettering, all edges gilt. Translated by R. C. Dallas with separate
English and French title pages as well as the text in both languages.
Illustrated with 48 (of 50) hand-colored plates of people of Alpine,
Bohemian, Moravian, Polish, and Hungarian cultures in native costumes.
Three plates are devoted to Jewish costume. An early copy with the
introduction in both English and French and the text on paper with an
1803 watermark while the plates are on paper with an 1817 watermark.
Abbey Travel 71; Colas 2112; Lipperheide 831; Lowndes, 530; Tooley 333.
Lacking plates 23 (A Bohemian Woman) and 27 (A Transylvanian Peasant),
and with plate 34 detached but present. Offsetting to text from the
plates. Bookplate of W. T. Denison on the front pastedown. Some
rubbing and wear but covers tight. Plates clean and fresh; binding Very
