Greetings Booklovers,
We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 9802 ) Cathcart, William. THE BAPTISTS AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.
Philadelphia: S. A. George & Co., 1876. First printing, Original cloth,
Duodecimo, 118 pages, black and white engraved plates. Very Good.
Interesting history of the prominent role played by the Baptist
denomination in the American Revolutionary War, including that of John Brown
of Rhode Island. Brown, a merchant ship owner, is sometimes credited with
starting the Revolution when he had eight of his vessels attack and destroy
the British schooner Gaspee in Narragansett Bay on June 9, 1772. Also has
good information on Baptist influence in securing religious freedoms in the
U. S. Constitution. Scarce. Bound in green cloth over boards with gilt
stamped title to spine, both boards stamped in gilt and blind, all edges
gilt, pale yellow endpapers. There are mild rubs to binding extremities,
some spotting toward fore edge of lower board, and a couple of small stains.
Contemporary prior owner bookplate on front pastedown (Rev. W. G. Jones).
Occasional marginalia left by prior owner, a couple of signatures beginning
to pull, otherwise sound. $250.00
