MATTHEW BRAYTON IN HIS THIRTY-FOUR YEARS OF CAPTIVITY AMONG THE
INDIANS OF NORTH-WESTERN AMERICA. Fostoria, Ohio: The Gray Printing
Company, 1896. 2nd edition of this rare narrative., itself very
scarce. Original cloth-backed printed boards, 5 3/4 X 4 1/2 inches,
a few light spots, closed tear on cover repaired, old names pencilled
on title page verso, 70 pages. a 13-line biographical postscript is
unique to this edition. USiana B729: "After being stolen as a lad in
Northwestern Ohio, successively traded to various western tribes, and
finally adopted by the Snakes, he wandered with them as far as
California and Oregon. Basically authentic, though confused in its
details and geography, it is one of the most remarkable . . . items
belonging to captivity literature." The text has been attributed to
