[Rarebooks] For Sale: Goethe's Works, 4 vols, 1787-91

GOETHE, [JOHANN WOLFGANG VON.]  GOETHE'S SCHRIFTEN.  [4 
VOLUMES.]   Leipzig: Georg Joachim Goeschen, 1787-1791.  First of 
this 4-volume edition, (based on the same publisher's more expensive 
8-volume edition.)  Old mottled calf, approx. 7 X 4 inches, nicely 
rebacked in leather, a pleasant set of this early edition.  Old 
numeral inked and struck through on front paste-down end papers. 
Lengthy note in German on 3 rear blanks of vol. 4 re "Die Geheimnisse", &c.
An extraordinary item of interest is a small printed broadside [?] 
pasted to the rear end paper of volume 1: "ADDITIONAL SALE. / The 
following works are duplicated copies belonging to /  the Library of 
the German Society, in this city" ( Philadelphia?), with this set 
heading the list of 26 titles in all  (with numerous typographical 
errors), ending with "Goethe's Propyglaeen [sic], (a Literary 
Journal) 9 Nos."  We would guess that this list  dates from about 
1802-1805.  The only illustrations issued with this edition are 
vignettes on each title page; these are after Meil, Oeser & Lips, 
engraved by Groegory (as with the copy described in the Yale Goethe 
catalog #12.)  $850.00
