*GILLMORE, Parker (Ubique). /DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE DESERT/*. Bound in
publisher's green cloth decorated in gilt with embossed head of lion.
Many black-&-white illustrations. Published by Kegan Paul, Trench & Co.,
London. 1888. 1st edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 234; with 32 page publisher's
catalogue at end of book. A sequel to Gillmore's "A Hunter's Arcadia",
published by Chapman and Hall in 1886.
Parker Gillmore was an adventurer and big-game hunter. He served as a
captain in the British Army during the Crimean War and had wide shooting
experience in North America, India, China, and Africa (see Geoffrey
Haresnape, "The Great Hunters"). Gillmore was also a prolific author and
editor of books, mainly of an "adventurous" nature and primarily
intended for a juvenile audience. This title - an account of a hunting
trip through southern Africa - is well-illustrated and factual enough,
but written in a rather overheated style. As the author observes: "As
the travelling in this part of the world is very rough, none but strong
heavy weapons should be taken by those who propose following in my
footsteps." The boards are bumped at the corners and rubbed at all
extremities. The cloth is lightly scuffed. Bookplate on inside front
board says that "This book is the property of the Manitoba and
North-Western Railway Employees' Library". No other similar markings.
Binding a bit shaken and stretched but otherwise clean and tight. A good
copy, notwithstanding, and very scarce - no copies shown by WorldCat in
institutional holdings as at date of cataloguing.
Price: $125.00.
Terms of sale - the price is in USD. Payment by check or credit card.
Postage and packing charge is $8. Returnable within seven days of
receipt if not as described.
