Playford for Robert Scott. 1681. 4to. (18),288,(12),104,(2),162pp. Title
printed in red & black. Illustrated with a total of 45 plates (mostly folding),
including a fine added engraved title and one plate with 2 volvelles; another
text engraving has a volvelle. Text illustrated with additional diagrams and
copper engravings. 5 parts have separate title pages dated 1680. Cont. paneled
calf, neatly rebacked, covers a bit rubbed and some small chips to the fore-edge
of the added engraved title, but overall a lovely copy. $4,500.00 (trade
discount allowed)
This is Volume 1 (no volume number appears on the title page) of a 2 volume
set. Volume 1 contains parts I-VI as noted on the title page, and Volume 2 (not
present) contains parts VII, the Astronomical Tables, and VIII, “A New
Geography..” which was also separately published (see Wing M2578). It is not unusual
to find this volume alone (see various records in Copac). The DNB calls A NEW
SYSTEM OF THE MATHEMATICS Moore’s “principal work.” It appeared 2 years
after his death in 1679, edited by William Hanway and John Potenger. It had been
written as a comprehensive math text for the mathematical school of Christ’s
Hospital, of which Moore was governor. Parts of this work were written by Peter
Perkins, John Flamsteed and Edmond Halley. Wing M2579; ENGLISH MARITIME BOOKS
#2557. Note: the auction records create some confusion in calling this work a
folio. It is not, but there are in fact some “large paper” copies which
should correctly be called large 4to.
