[HAND-COLORED COSTUME PLATES]. JOURNAL DES DAMES ET DES MODES.
[Paris]: (Revue de La Mesangere) 1816 - 1818. First Edition. Six
octavo (4-3/4" x 7-3/4") volumes bound in contemporary calf-backed
decorated boards with contrasting red and black gilt-lettered spine
labels and gilt spine decorations. A full three years of this scarce
publication which began in 1797 and lasted until 1839. Present are
all of the issues for the period of 1816 - 1818 but one (Issue 63
from 1818) and a total of 247 hand-colored fashion plates of
predominantly but not exclusively women numbered from 1533 to 1784.
The 4 plates not accounted for are 1668 and 1739, both the second
plate in a single issue, and plates 1773 and 1774 from the missing
issue. Most of the plates feature people dressed in fashions of the
time, but there are also plates of individual items, usually hats and
several to a plate. University library bookplate on front pastedowns
and ink stamps on title pages and bottom edge of bulked text, but in
general the text is clean and all of the plates are unmarked. Covers
firm, with slight loss of leather from small area on spine where tape
was removed. Plates generally clean and fresh; binding Very Good.
