I. The two major works by the Roman scholar Varro (116-27 B.C.E.) “De Lingua
Latina” and “De Re Rustica,” with the important commentaries of Scaliger. The
1581 edition is notable for the suppression of M. A. Muret’s literary hoax,
and Scaliger’s commentary on it, which had been printed in the Estienne, 1573
edition. See Renouard 148, #2; Adams V283; Schreiber, THE ESTIENNES #207.
II. “Estienne’s specialized grammatical dissertation on Varro’s treatment of
linguistic analogy, followed by J. C. Scaliger’s short treatise on the same
subject.” (Schreiber, #221). Renouard 154, #1; Adams S1750 (under “Stephanus”
).
