[Rarebooks] FS - Charles Kingsley's Works in leather

  We offer for sale a collection of the works of the famous 19th century 
novelist and poet, Charles Kingsley (1819-1875). This lot of 42 books, 
contains 33 individual titles; being all of Kingsley's prose works, most 
of his sermons, and all but one of his books of poetry.

Each volume was uniformly bound for the noted British bibliophile, 
Francis Frederick Fox in handsome 3/4 polished calf over marbled boards, 
with the top edge gilt, and the endpapers marbled. On the spine of each 
volume are three coloured leather labels; the first (top) of which 
states "Kingsley's Works", the second (middle) stating the title of the 
individual volume, and the third (bottom) stating the year of publication.

The armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox is either inserted as a 
cancel leaf, or the bookplate is tipped-in. The binding of each volume 
is signed "William George, Bristol", being the binder, publisher and 
bookseller more commonly encountered as "William George's Sons". All 
publishers' advertising pages, normally found at the end of most of the 
first editions of these titles, have been removed by the binder.

We acquired this collection from the estate of the late Anglican divine, 
Dr. James A. Brown, who studied at Oxford University shortly after the 
end of World War II and who, presumably, acquired this set during his 
years of residence in England.

Each title is either a first edition, or an early printing, and the 
collection includes all of Kingsley's most famous works, including 
/Hypatia, The Water Babies, /and /Westward Ho!/ (each of these titles in 
this collection is a first edition).

The set has, over the years, suffered some wear-and-tear to the

However, the contents of all volumes are in very good condition, with no 
significant defects. The titles are:

novel. Early British editions now very scarce.

edition of the author's second book of poems.
5) /At Last: A Christmas in the West Indies/. Macmillan, London and New 
York, 1871, the first edition in two volumes, "with illustrations".

Macmillan, Cambridge and London, 1865, first edition. Very scarce item.

holding.

12) /The Hermits/. Macmillan, [London], ND [1868], with coloured title 
page and three monotone illustrations. Problematic to pinpoint first 
issue. Reprinted at least ten times until 1891, the stated second 
edition appearing in 1871, and all printings thereafter were dated. This 
title was apparently serialized in 1868 in "The Sunday Library for 
Household Reading", which may account for the unusual (for Kingsley's 
works) coloured title page and lack of publication date. We are 
reasonably confident that this is a copy of the first appearance of this 
title /in book form/.

few spots of foxing to preliminary pages of first volume.
