*GUTENBERG, Johannes (printer). /BIBLIA SACRA [Gutenberg Bible]./* Two
volume facsimile edition in matching elephant folio volumes. Published
by Pageant Books, Inc., Paterson, NJ. 1961.
Gutenberg (1400-1468) is regarded as the inventor of modern printing
from movable type. He produced what is arguably the world's most famous
and expensive book, in 1455. It is sometimes referred to as the 42-line
bible or, more commonly, as Gutenberg's bible. According to the
colophon, this is the first facsimile edition of the Gutenberg bible
printed in the United States, and [when this colophon was written] only
the second facsimile edition printed anywhere in the world. The
reproduction is taken from the Ansel Verlag edition which, in turn, was
based on the copy in the Koniglichen Bibliothek in Berlin and the copy
in the Standischen Landesbibliothek in Fulda, considered by authorities
to be the most beautifully illuminated of the 47 copies known to exist.
The text pages have been printed by lithography and the illuminated
pages by sheet-fed gravure. The paper used is 100 per cent rag content
made especially for this book. This edition has been hand bound in two
volumes and is limited to 1000 sets, of which 996 were put up for sale.
Each volume measures 18 1/4 by 12 3/4 inches (46.5 by 32.5 cm) and
weighs just under 17 lbs. (7.7 kg) each. Obviously, shipping will be an
issue, but we will be pleased to quote options and costs to suit the
needs of any purchaser anywhere in the world. Both volumes show a touch
of scuffing, here and there, to the sturdy cloth binding. The contents
are immaculate, and the binding is tight. Overall, both volume are in
very good, to near fine, condition.
Price: $3,250.00.
Terms of sale - The price is in USD. Payment by check, credit card, or
as arranged. Institutions accommodated. Returnable, with prior notice,
within seven days of receipt if not as described.
