DOUGLASS, Frederick. NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS,
AN AMERICAN SLAVE, WRITTEN BY HIMSELF. Boston: Anti-Slavery Office
1845. First Edition. Stitched wraps. Illustrated with a frontispiece
portrait of Douglass. xvi, 125 pages. Preface by William Lloyd
Garrison and printing a letter by Wendell Phillips. Douglass's first
book and the preeminent slave narrative of the 19th century. This is
an unusual copy in that it appears never to have been bound but
rather consists of a group of signatures stitched together. The front
endpaper is absent and the rear endpaper is only partly present. The
portrait and the following 20 pages are chewed in the upper right
margin to varying degrees but never with any loss to text or image.
The text shows an occasional stain and rather light foxing
throughout. Good or better and quite unusual in this state. $2500.00
