Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
(No. 10062) Accoce, Pierre and Pierre Quet (Translated by A. M. Sheridan
Smith). A MAN CALLED LUCY, 1939-1945 (GEN. MATTHEW B. RIDGWAY'S COPY,
SIGNED).
New York: Coward-McCann, Inc., (1967). First American edition, Full cloth,
Octavo, 250 pages, black and white photographic plates. Very Good in a Very
Good Dust Jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
Story of Rudolf Roessler, German émigré to Switzerland and dedicated
anti-Nazi whose espionage ring included highly placed officers within
Hitler's high command. These contacts remained undetected throughout World
War II and their intelligence quite possibly cost Hitler the war. This is an
interesting association copy in that it was U.S Army General Matthew B.
Ridgway's own copy, bearing his ownership signature and date on front free
endpaper. In addition, there is a critical article on the Battle of the
Bulge, clipped from the American Legion Magazine, on which Ridgway has
written and initialed a note at the top of the first page. The article
questions whether Stalin, through Roessler [Lucy], knew of Hitler's plans
for the attack but withheld the information from the Americans. Ridgway was
a key Corps commander at the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout the text of the
book Ridgway has also made occasional underlines and margin ticks. And
finally, tipped in at rear, is a typed transcript of a letter to Ridgway
from Stewart McClintic discussing the book and McClintic's knowledge and
experiences relative to the events it describes. McClintic was a U.S.
intelligence officer with the British Air Ministry during the war. This
letter is initialed and signed by Ridgway, explaining that it was "copied
from the long-hand." Bound in gray cloth over boards with red endpapers,
spine titled in black. Slight fading toward top edges of boards, shallow
bumps along heel of spine. Jacket has minor edge wear and a bit of browning
along spine.
