Quarto, 159 pages, black and white photographic plates. Very Good.
Boston's tribute to two native sons who successfully defended the
America's Cup in 1885, 1886, and 1887. General Charles J. Paine was a Civil
War veteran and noted yachtsman and Edward Burgess was an innovative yacht
designer. Includes biographies of both men, an introductory history of the
America's Cup races, histories of specific races, transcript of the Deed of
Gift of the Cup to the New York Yacht Club (which governed the races), an
account of the reception for Paine and Burgess at Faneuil Hall, addresses
given, correspondence, etc. Illustrated with 13 plates including the
schooner America, Burgess's Boston sloops Puritan, Mayflower, and Volunteer,
English cutters Genesta and Galatea, and more. TOY #1567; MORRIS & HOWLAND
p. 18. Bound dark brown cloth over bevelled boards with gilt-stamped spine
and upper board, decorated endpapers. Contemporary bookplate of Henry D.
Burnham on front pastedown, inscription to Burnham from James Ormond at top
fore corner of preliminary blank. Moderate foxing to some plates, one leaf
of text (pp. 15/16) has a 1.25 inch tear at top inner margin which does not
reach the text. Binding shows minor extremity rubs and wear, hinges remain
sound. Nice copy.
