titles (hardback). First edition. Signed twice by [Col.] F.F. Flint,
who was commanding officer at Fort Sanders. Includes 32 appendices,
containing reports on: life-saving apparatus, guns, projectiles;
construction of a 10-inch muzzle-loading rifle and an 8-inch
breech-loading rifle; trial of the Taylor battery gun and of many
other weapons and fuses; Board to select a magazine gun, and more. A
few small tears to the spine ends, finger soiling to boards, binding

and seal of the Ordnance Dept., marbled endpapers, all edges marbled
(hardback). First edition. Signed by Chief of Ordnance, Jno E.
Smith, with his card, as a gift to the Commandery.Smith, who was
Brigadier General John E. Smith of the 45th Illinois, led the 17th
Corps for most of the war, and retired in 1881. Corners and edges of

+ 30 lvs of plates. Illus. with 2 b/w photos, 3 photo-lithographed
drawings, and 31 sets of photo-lithographed trial results. 4to. Red
cloth ruled in blind and stamped with gilt title and seal of the
Ordnance Dept. (hardback). First edition. Signed by Acting Chief of
Ordnance, Jno E. Smith, on his bookplate. Department return envelope
and unsigned letter from the Bureau tipped in. Gift to the Commandery
from Gen. S[tephen] V[incent] Benet, Chief of Ordnance. The Gatling
Gun, invented in 1861 saw limited used in the Civil War, but serious
testing and adoption began only after 1866. Spine torn, boards
sunned, especially at the fore edges, else a very good copy.
