(AMERICAN INDIANS) Catlin, George. LETTERS AND NOTES ON THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS,
AND CONDITION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS... In Two Volumes. With Several
Hundred Illustrations from the Author’s Original Paintings. Fourth Edition.
London: David Bogue. 1844. 8vo. 2 vols. viii,264;viii,266pp. Profusely
illustrated with 309 illustrations on 177 leaves, plus 3 maps (1 folding). Cont. half
tan calf, gilt, over marbled boards, edges of covers a bit rubbed, but an
attractive binding. Many of the plates in Vol. I have the oval rubber stamp of the “
Royal Union Library, Bath” on the verso. The frontispiece in Vol. I is backed
and 2 other plates are neatly mounted. One leaf of text has a repaired tear
(no loss). $850.00 (trade discount allowed)
The plate count in this set is confusing as plate #1 and #2 are actually the
frontispiece and folding map in Vol. I; 7 plate numbers are not found and 5
plates are added. See Howes, C241.
