Greetings Booklovers,

We are pleased to offer:
~
No. 9829 ) Verne, Jules (1828-1905) Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. HECTOR SERVADAC.
New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., 1878. Original cloth, Octavo, x, [2], 370, [2] pages, black and white wood engraved plates. Very good.
The first illustrated American edition of this fantastic tale by Verne, in which several people from different countries on earth are pulled onto a closely passing comet. They must find a way to return to earth, which they do two years later by balloon. Originally published in 1877. The illustrations are by Paul de Philippoteaux and consist of 92 plates engraved on wood by Laplante. Philippoteaux also painted the enormous cycloramas of the American Civil War, including the one remaining at Gettysburg. Bound in rust-colored cloth over beveled boards with elaborate decoration in gilt and black to upper board and spine. Binding shows rubs with some mild fraying to cloth at extremities, some light foxing to endpapers. Textblock is mildly browned with an occasional leaf showing a finger mark here or there. Remarkably, the hinges are not cracked. All in all a very nice copy of this early and bold science fiction effort. Housed in a custom made clamshell box. $500.00
