and small amount of new material.
Before Bush-Gore there was Hayes -Tilden. Describes an incident in
the election of 1876, the most contested of the 19th century and
includes a series of cipher dispatches of alleged secret Democratic
plans to buy off legislators and others in Florida. South Carolina,
and Oregon to swing the presidential election to Tilden. Introduction
signed in type R.W. [Reid Whitelaw]. Signed on the front wrapper by
Ossian Ray (1835-1892) solicitor for Coos County, New Hampshire, a
member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, delegate to the
Republican National Convention in 1872, and later a Congressman. A
very good copy, minor soiling, scattered foxing. [28391] $250.00
