the Weaving and Decorative Arts of Central Asia" London; Oguz Press:
1980. An important set of articles and essays on various aspects of
Turkoman carpets and Turkoman design. “The first part contains ten
contributions of fundamental importance by the specialists who studied
Turkoman carpets and the tribes who wove them from the time at which their
territory was finally conquered by the Russians in 1881. The second part
publishes current work by today’s specialists. Apart from an essay on the
unique type of carpets depicted in two 15th century miniature paintings
and two contributions on tent bags, the main theme of the volume concerns
the beautiful and rare items which the Turkomans made for the complex
ritual of the wedding procession. In six separate studies the authors
present rare groups of camel hangings and the tent door decorations and
carpets which relate to them, the silk embroidered wedding hangings made
by Turkoman brides, and the symbolism of the Great Bird and Animal Tree”.
