CATHER, Willa. DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP. New York: Knopf
1927. First Edition. Original green cloth-backed marbled boards. The
true First Edition of this classic novel of the Southwest, one of
only 175 numbered copies SIGNED by the author, this copy not
numbered. Based on the following inscription on the recto of the
limitation page, this copy was likely acquired directly from the
printer: "Agnes McNaught" and in an apparently different hand: "from
Willa Cather/whom I met at/Plimpton Press." The name of Agnes Hackert,
in the same hand as the other (obviously one is a maiden name), on
the front pastedown. Most consider this book Cather's greatest
achievement. Offsetting to front pastedown and endpaper, otherwise
contents quite fresh. Spine is dull with slight loss of cloth at the
head though the leather label is intact and the gilt strong. Boards
are rubbed and worn along the edges. Good copy, lacking the slipcase.
                                                               $2500.00
