Spencer (1630-1693) was an English theologian (The Dean of Elys) and Hebrew 
scholar. This work first appeared in 1685. It was expanded in 1727. Our 
continental printing is the same text as the 1727, but with the addition of a 
preliminary dissertation and life of Spencer by the editor C. M. Pfaffius. The text 
is a survey of the ancient Hebrews and rabbinic institutions.
