[Gauden, John]. EIKON BASILIKE [in Greek]. THE POURTRAICTURE OF HIS SACRED
MAJESTIE IN HIS SOLITUDES AND SUFFERINGS... (London: Henry Hills). 1649. 8vo.
(8),278 (“178” printed in error),(2)pp. Title page printed in red & black.
Folding engraved frontispiece portrait (Madan #13, which Madan had not seen in
this edition; the frontispiece is normally Madan #4). Orig. binding of reddish
brown morocco, with two gilt tooled compartments on both covers, spine rubbed,
with small abrasions. A.e.g. Title a bit soiled, but overall a very attractive
copy in the original binding. $750.00 (less a 20% trade discount)
This edition is Madan #27 and Almack #46, and Wing E309 (only 2 U.S.
holdings). Originally attributed to Charles I, it is now acknowledged that the author
is John Gauden. There are at least 40 different English editions printed in
1649 (some dated 1648, but actually printed in 1649). As per Madan’s annotation,
our copy does not have two final leaves (a 2 leaf gathering signed with 3
stars) that was added to some copies, but “the last two leaves... are often
wanting.” (Madan, p. 40). Clearly, they were never bound into this copy.
