History of the Language and an English Grammar. In Two Volumes. London: Printed 
by W. Strahan for J. and P. Knapton et al. 1755. Tall folio (16-3/4”). 2 
volumes. Unpaginated double column text. Titles printed in red & black. Bound in 
19th century polished brown calf, spines very attractively rebacked to match, 
with 6 raised bands and 2 morocco labels. With the 19th c. bookplate of “Geo. 
Hartley, Esq.” A very clean attractive set. Some minor occasional text foxing 
and an old repaired tear to a blank portion of the title page of Volume 2, 
expertly repaired and not quickly noticed.     $18,500.00 (trade discount allowed)
This copy with the least common variants (not first edition points) as 
detailed by Todd, (THE BOOK COLLECTOR, Vol. 14, No.2): gathering 19D with press 
figures “9” and “7”; under the word “Part” sense 7, the citation reads, “Bacon’
s Natural History”; and under the word “Song” sense 2, the citation reads “
Shakespeare.” PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN #201. Grolier, English 100, #50.
