NEWHOUSE, S[EWELL]. THE TRAPPER'S GUIDE; A MANUAL OF INSTRUCTION FOR CAPTURING ALL KINDS OF FUR-BEARING ANIMALS, AND CURING THEIR SKINS, WITH OBSERVATIONS ON THE FUR-TRADE, HINTS ON LIFE IN THE WOODS, AND NARRATIVES OF TRAPPING AND HUNTING EXCURSIONS. THIRD EDITION. EDITED BY THE ONEIDA COMMUNITY. N. Y.: Oakley, Mason & Co., 1869. Original pictorial cloth, sides blindstamped, spine stamped in gold, approx. 9 X 6 inches, some soiling and wear, but a sound copy, 215, [1] pages. Frontispiece portrait. 32 plates, as listed, and numerous text-illustrations. Laid in is an 1882 folded
2-page circular from the E. C. Boughton firm of N. Y., giving the prices paid for pelts and instructions, and the firm's shorter printed letter of the same date regarding black skunks and muskrats. There are also 2 written notes from Boughton to Thos. B. Graham of Schraabenburg[h], N. J. - a receipt for muskrat, mink and opossum pelts, &c, in 1882. Graham's name-stamp appears on the fly-leaf. (Schraabenburg[h] was the original name of Bergen, N. J., given it by its early Dutch farming settlers. Boughton, incidentally, sold Newhouse traps, with and without chains. Newhouse was a member of the Oneida Community.) An interesting copy. $150.00 (Trade Discount Available)
