Ells, B.F., editor
The Western Miscellany, : Volume I July 1848 to July 1849
B.F. Ells, 1849, Hardcover, Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall, 384 pp., VG-/

Miscellany indeed, this is a compendium of history, anecdote, religion,
agriculture, morality, education, biography, and the like, covering not
just the United States, but the rest of the world. The nature of man,
how to anneal cast iron, the history of the use of salt, portrait
painting among the 'red indians,' an essay on the musk ox, steam power
in the manufacture of sugar, the number of common thieves in London, and
similar facts for your enlightenment.

In the mid-1800s, such compilations and gazettes were the way Joe
Average got a view of the country and world beyond the county line. This
book readily shows what the editor thought were the facts and moral
directions that the public should be exposed to. Appears to be a
compiled offprint of a periodical of the same title. Privately printed
by the editor. Black and white engravings and other illustrations of all
kinds. Index at rear called "Contents." Modern rebind in black cloth,
gilt title to spine.

Text block untrimmed, wear to edges and corners. Moderate, pervasive
foxing doesn't impair readability. Missing four leaves immediately after
title page. Externally clean and perfect with no bumps. Internally VG-.
