“Drinking-Cups, Vases, Ewers, and Ornaments designed for the Use of Gold
and Silversmiths. Twenty-one Fac-similes of Extremely Rare Etchings by
Virgil Solis.”

Published by James Rimmel, London: 1862

Born in 1514 in Germany, Virgil Solis [1514-1562] was an engraver who
created a number of designs for metalwork, ceramics, furniture and silver,
as well as popular figure and costume prints, landscapes, portraits and
such. He is known to have worked with Nuremburg goldsmith Wenzel
Jamnitzer, and to have made engravings from some of Jamnitzer's drawings.

“Drinking-Cups, Vases, Ewers and Ornaments” is a 19th century re-issue of
21 etched plates, each with fly sheet, featuring reproductions of some of
the engravings of silver and decorative designs for silver which Virgil
Solis produced in his short life. This copy has been rebound with the
original pebbled cloth cover laid down on the front board. A scarce volume
with only 8 copies located by OCLC.

Hardcover. 7.5"x11", ii pages + 21 etched plates. Publisher's pebbled
brown cloth front cover with gilt title has been rebacked with new
endpapers, a new cloth spine and new rear cover. There is some sun fading
on the front cover. The interior shows some foxing and spotting. $750.00
