"Treasures of Art in Great Britain: Being an account of the chief
collections of paintings, drawings, sculptures, illuminated mss., &c, &c.
[with the] Supplement"

By Dr. [Gustav] Waagen.

Published in London by John Murray: 1854 & 1857.

An important and influential survey of public and private art collections
in early Victorian England, focusing on paintings, drawings, sculpture and
manuscripts. Waagen had written an earlier, shorter version of the work
after a visit to Britain in 1835, but this, the more useful edition, was
updated, re-written, and re-focused for an English audience.

Waagen [1794-1868] was the Director of the Berlin Museum and an
influential art historian. A friend of Charles Eastlake, Waagen was a
great believer in art education and accessible art museums for the working
classes, and the testimony he supplied to a Parliamentary Committee on
this subject in 1835 eventually helped lead to the founding of the South
Kensington (Victoria & Albert) Museum.

Hardcover. 4 vols. 6”x9”, lx + 430 pages; v + 403 pages; vi + 486 pages;
vii + 560 pages. Publisher’s red and black patterned cloth with gilt spine
