First illustrated edition. Octavo, contemporary 
tree calf bordered in gilt on front & rear 
panels, flat spine titled and decorated in gilt, 
marbled endpapers. 8 volumes in two. Issued as 
THE NOVELISTS MAGAZINE Volume XIV and XV, with 
separately printed titles. With 25 finely 
engraved plates by Stoddard. Spines a trifle dull 
and with mild wear, hinges starting but holding nicely; a very good set.
¶ An epistolary novel, first published in 1748, 
which tells the tragic story of a heroine whose 
quest for virtue is continually thwarted by her 
family. It is commonly cited as the longest novel in the English language.
