I can offer...
HOMER. The Iliad of Homer. Translated by Mr. Pope. Dublin:
Printed by John Halden, John Rice, and Ann Colles, 1791.
The seventh edition. With engraved frontispiece portraits of
Homer and Pope in volume one, a folded map of Homeric Greece in volume
two, and an engraved plate of the Shield of Achilles in volume three.
Four 12mo volumes, contemporary full acid-stained calf, dark red and
brown lettering labels on the spines. xxxv, 218; 396; [iv], 320; 248,
[58] pp. The spines are a bit dry, the heads of the spines are
chipped, and the joints show some starting along the extremities but
are still quite firm; some mild overall browning and the occasional
spot of foxing in the text; otherwise in good condition. The plates
are unusually clean.
A nice little set of Pope's version of the Iliad--not so much a
translation as an adaptation, as Samuel Johnson recognized. First
published in 1715-1720, later eighteenth century editions seem to have
become rather uncommon on the market, especially in decent condition.
Volume on includes Pope's celebratred "Essay on the Life, Writings
and Learning of Homer," and the final volume includes indices of Places
and Things; Arts and Sciences; and a Poetical index.
$450 plus shipping.
