MILLER, Henry. ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT with PHOTOCOPIED
TYPESCRIPT and THREE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE SUBJECT: EPHRAIM
DONER. A 19-page (8-1/2" x 11") memoir COMPLETELY IN MILLER'S HAND of
the Jewish painter Ephraim Doner, a close friend of Miller's.
Accompanied by three photocopied typescripts of the memoir with
several photocopied corrections and three small original photographs
of Doner, one with identifying notes on the reverse, apparently in
another hand, dating the photograph to July 1977 and stating: "this
picture is going to be in the new Henry Miller book." Miller
published an essay about Doner in his book MY BIKE AND OTHER FRIENDS
in 1978, and this is likely the manuscript basis for that essay.
"...It was in Big Sur that I first became acquainted with this
phenomenal being.... He was like a man out of the early Middle Ages.
He could discourse on most anything. But his favorite subject
(presumably) was the Old Testament, the ancient prophets, the
miracles, the very language, whether in Hebrew, Yiddish or
English.... At table, which always opened with rapid prayer (in
Hebrew) Ephraim would soon begin reminiscing about some book he had
just read or was in the process of reading. This led to vivacious
discussion about authors past and present - Cervantes, Hamsun, Proust,
Joyce, O'Casey, and, not least of all, Isaac Bashevis Singer, whom
we both adored.... A completely different side of him came to the
fore when it became time to tackle the canvas...." Much, much more.
An especially interesting piece in that Miller has often been accused
of anti-Semitism, and indeed in this essay one wonders why he
stresses Doner's religion. Superb and scarce example of a lengthy
holograph manuscript. $7500.00
