*ELIOT, T. S.,/ EAST COKER/*. Faber and Faber, London. 1940. 1st
edition, wrappers, 8vo, pp. 15. Original stapled card covers show wear
at spine and are a bit darkened. Corners slightly turned. Contents
clean. A good plus copy.

"East Coker" is the second of four poems which, together, are known as
"Four Quartets". They were published individually from 1935 to 1942, and
first published together, in book form, in 1943. Eliot considered "Four
Quartets" to be his masterpiece, even though their appeal was to a more
limited audience than most of his other poetry. Each poem, running to no
more than several hundred lines, makes demands upon the reader that
often exhaust one's intellectual energy. Nevertheless, they are great
poetry and formed a substantial contribution to the justification for
the Nobel Prize for literature awarded to Eliot in 1948. Copies of the
rather fragile first printing are seldom seen, and usually in well-worn
condition. Our copy has the former owner's name and a date (1940),
written lightly in pencil (and thus easily erased, if so desired), on
the top right of the front free endpaper.
