FS: Scrapbook with significant African-American interest

$125 postpaid in USA (postage at cost elsewhere)

Mid-1940s scrapbook, 15 x 10.5 inches, color illustration of sailboat on the
cover, red cloth spine. About 40 leaves of newsprint quality paper, many
used only on recto, some both sides. FULL of newspaper clippings pertaining
to African-Americans (referred to as “Negroes” in most cases in these
articles): many on soldiers, multiple births (triplets and even a set of
quads), long-lived elders (a 109-year-old former slave cast in the movie
“Cabin in the Sky,” obit for a 116-year-old woman who “attributed her long
span of life to eating good, red meat,” etc.) Also children, heroes,
occupations, human interest, all pertaining to blacks. Some personal items
(schoolwork, greeting cards) on a few pages, some “Family Register” pages
from a Bible laid in which, with the other personal items herein, should
lead to identification of the maker of the album. Pages and articles lightly
toned as expected. Cover worn around the edges, the cloth binding tape worn
and torn in a few places, one page has section cut out. Very interesting
reading these articles to observe, no matter the nature of the subject, the
patronizing and prejudiced language allowed to appear in print at that
mid-Century period. There are also clippings on civil rights actions and
other pieces with a more positive message.
