"Harry Davis. Painter"

Published by Helen Davis in 1949.

Born Herschel Davidowitz in Lodz, Poland in 1892, Herschel showed talent
as a painter which was squelched by his pragmatic parents. The artist
(then in the embroidery business) emigrated to America in 1923, and
employed two young men named Raphael Soyer and Chaim Gross in his
workshop. In 1940, in reaction to the rise of Nazism in Europe and the
death of his son, he began painting again, with European Jewry as his
theme. He showed his works to Gross, who encouraged him and suggested he
join the Art League of America. Raphael Soyer wrote the biographical note
to this catalog of Davis’ work.

Hardcover. 8”x10”, 6 pages plus black & white plates. Covers with some
wear, slight "bow", a little soil. Spine a bit rough (see photo),
endpapers with a little light soil, else fine and clean inside. $65.00
