KIPLING, Rudyard (illustrated by Jessie M. KING) L'Habitation Forcee. Paris:
Rene Kieffer 1921. First edition. Limited to 550 copies, of which this is
number 296 of 500 copies on handmade paper. Small 4to, pictorial wrappers,
in original glassine. TEXT IN FRENCH. With 28 lovely watercolor
illustrations in POCHOIR by Jessie M. King. Very good condition, short split
to bottom front spine edge in glassine and cover, some pale small toned
spots on several pages, only one just touching the corner of an image. Some
pages unopened, edges not trimmed, several pages with a fine line of toning
along the untrimmed edge. All else very clean and intact.

This is the only book done in pochoir (hand-colored through stencils) by the
celebrated Scottish artist, illustrator, and book designer, Jessie M. King
(1875-1949). Jessie King’s artwork reflects the Arts & Crafts aesthetic and
has a decided nuance of Japanese woodblock style in coloring and
composition. She was enormously popular as an illustrator, and among other
projects she designed and illustrated over 250 books.
