An amazing set in PHOTOGRAVURE and TYPOGRAVURE

Sheldon, George William. Recent Ideals of American Art - One Hundred
Seventy-Five Oil Paintings and Water Colors in the Galleries of Private
Collectors Reproduced in Paris on Copper Plates by the Goupil Photogravure
and Typogravure Process. NY: D. Appleton and Company, 1888, 1889, 1890. IN 5
VOLUMES. Folio, 17 x 12-3/4 inches, with 150 pages of text. Half-leather
with illustrated paper boards. Illustrations on heavy quality paper with
tissue guards.

This title was one of the “coffee table” books of its day and was issued in
a variety of formats and bindings, most formidably in one or two volumes.
This is the first complete five-volume set I have seen offered in many
years.

This set of images not only provides a very special collection of examples
of photogravure and typogravure, the images themselves portray the aesthetic
and lifestyles of the late Victorian era. Dozens of artists are represented,
including Childe Hassam,. George Inness, Henry Mosler, Walter Gay, Maria
Brooks, W.H. Lippincott, F.A. Bridgman, Charles Sprague Pierce, Ridgeway
Knight, Percy Moran and many others.

Condition: The cover edges show average wear for such large volumes, with
one spine somewhat more pronounced with flaking leather. The cover paper is
a bit toned, with some surface soil but no defacements. Internally the books
are tight and clean, with some very minor small issues here and there (one
page corner torn, some pages with a little foxing along bottom edge, nothing
dramatic enough to warrant a page-by-page description.)

Current listings for one or two-volume versions run $500-$1000, depending on
binding and condition. I need to find a good home for this set, so I’m
offering it for $275 postpaid in the US. I’m afraid that shipping elsewhere
would be difficult and very expensive. (They weigh in at 18 pounds!)
