SPENCER, Herbert. WORKS. Incomplete set in 11 volumes, SIGNED
presentation copies from the author to Lady Portsmouth with 8
AUTOGRAPH LETTERS. London & Edinburgh: Williams & Norgate 1891-1900.
Eleven volumes bound in publisher's purple cloth with gilt lettering
and decorations. Published separately, not as a set, and here
comprising most of the books issued (a manuscript index laid in
indicates that 17 volumes were originally sent to Lady Portsmouth):
FIRST PRINCIPLES with Spencer's SIGNATURE tipped in; PRINCIPLES OF
ETHICS in two volumes, each INSCRIBED "from the author" and each with
an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Spencer tipped in; PRINCIPLES OF
SOCIOLOGY in three volumes, each INSCRIBED "from the author" and two
with an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Spencer tipped in; PRINCIPLES OF
BIOLOGY in two volumes with an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Spencer
tipped into one volume; and ESSAYS: SCIENTIFIC, POLITICAL, &
SPECULATIVE in three volumes, one volume INSCRIBED "from the author"
and all three with an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Spencer tipped in.
The main canon of Spencer's philosophy was his theory of evolution (a
term he popularized), especially as it applied to the study of
society. His development of evolutionary theory actually predated
Darwin's major works. Spencer also coined the term "survival of the
fittest" in his PRINCIPLES OF BIOLOGY first published in 1864. Seven
of the volumes have the cloth evenly sunned, corners a little bumped,
extremities slightly rubbed. Very Good to Fine $5000.00
