Flanders, and France; Scotland and Ireland: with a Particular Account of the English
Prisons... To Which Is Added, an Account of the Lazarettoes. Newcastle: Printed
by W. Thompson. 1790. (4),186pp. A few minor spots on title page. Both works
bound together in marbled boards, slightly soiled, nicely rebacked in period

Howard (1726-1790) was a social crusader who sought through his many writings
to improve conditions in prisons and hospitals. The "Lazarettoes" mentioned
in the second title were coastal quarantine stations designed to prevent the
importation of the Plague. Both works are quite scarce. Although published in
the same year by the same printer, they are not usually found together.
