*WHISTLER, J. McNeill. /"NOTES" - "HARMONIES" - "NOCTURNES"/.* Two
delicate printed catalogues in stitched brown card covers. Published by
the author. London. 1884 and 1886. 1st edition, wrappers. Each catalogue
measures approximately 19 x 14.5 cm.
The first catalogue contains eight pages, and lists 67 paintings, the
list being preceded by a short L'Envoie, apparently written by Whistler,
as its sentiments reflect his philosophy of art. It is dated 1884 (no
month shown), and shows Whistler's residence at Tite Street, Chelsea
(London). Possibly the exhibition was at his home, but it is also known
that Whistler had an exhibition of his work in May, 1884, at the
Dowdeswell Gallery, London, and that Whistler also designed the
catalogue issued for this exhibition. On the front cover of this first
catalogue is reproduced Whistler's signature: a stylized butterfly with
a stinger for a tail (this was how Whistler signed his paintings). The
second catalogue contains seven pages, and lists 75 paintings. It does
not have a L'Envoie. It is designated "Second Series" and is dated May,
1886. It shows the address as 133, New Bond Street. W., which is likely
a gallery address. This catalogue also has a stylized design on the
front cover - different than on the other catalogue - and not so clearly
a butterfly with a tail. The pages of the first catalogue are stained
across the top, and there is writing to the margin of the L'Envoie ("Ars
est celare artem"). The outside bottom corner of the first two pages is
slightly chipped. The covers are worn and lightly spotted, but intact.
The second catalogue is in better condition, with some wear and light
creasing to the covers, and creasing down the middle of the contents.
Pencil notes to
margins of pages 3 and 4 (which could be erased). These are scarce
items. Sold as a set of two.
Price: $175.00.
