MARAN,  Rene  (Miguel COVARRUBIAS). BATOUALA.  New  York:  Limited
Editions  Club  1932.  Small  folio  (8-1/2"  x  13")  bound  in  full
blind-stamped  brown  leather. Copy #1205 of 1500 with beautiful  line
drawings  and color illustrations by Miguel Covarrubias and SIGNED  by
the  artist  on the colophon page. The first African novel to  portray
Black  Africans as they are and not as white men in blackface. One  of
the  more  attractive early titles from the press, not often found  in
acceptable  condition let alone as nice as this copy with the  leather
still  supple and bright. A tasteful bookplate on the front  pastedown
might be seen as the only defect. Fine in a Fine slipcase.     $450.00
