Printed by the Societe of Stationers [and Eliot's Court Press, London]. 1624. 
4to. (22),527,(9)pp. Blank A1 not present. Early 19th century blind tooled 
calf. Outer hinges cracked but holding soundly. Title page a bit soiled and very 
small loss at blank top outer corner. Signature of "Samuel Symonds, 1664" 
on title. 19th century bookplate of the Earl of Leitrum.     $3,500.00 (trade

The rare first edition. James Ussher (1581-1656), the Protestant Archbishop 
of Armagh's reply to a work by the Jesuit William Malone entitled, "The 
Jesuites Challenge." Malone's essay (of which no separate printing is known to 
survive) is printed in the preliminaries (p. [21-24]) of Ussher's reply. STC 
24542 noting "Quires B-000 printed in Dublin, the rest in London." No copy 
has appeared at auction in the last 30 years.
